History of the Organization
The American Academy of Oral Pathology (AAOP) was officially organized in 1948, and, in 1950, Oral Pathology was approved as a specialty by the American Dental Association. The Academy was renamed the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology (AAOMP) in 1995, when the official name of the specialty changed from Oral Pathology to Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. The American Board of Oral Pathology was approved by the American Dental Association in 1950, and became the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology (ABOMP) in keeping with the official name changes of the specialty and of the sponsoring organization.
